Tigh nan Shian
Culkein Stoer
Sutherland
Within a drive of only two-hours from Inverness, we offer total peace and tranquillity - the only sounds being the birds and the sea. As you read this, whales, porpoises and dolphins may be cruising past our headland. Tigh nan Shian (pronounced Tie na She-an) is situated in Culkein on the Stoer peninsula in Assynt. It has panoramic views of the sea, Oldany Island, Handa Island bird sanctuary and the Sutherland mountains. The village of Lochinver is a scenic, 20-minute drive away and has all local amenities including shops, pubs, restaurants, garage, bank, leisure centre and health centre.
Tigh nan Shian makes an ideal base for relaxing, walking, sailing, beach-combing, climbing, bird-watching, fishing (both sea and loch) and geology.

Sightseeing opportunities abound for all the family, many only a short walk or drive from the house. Less than an hour’s drive away, the village of Ullapool has a leisure centre, including swimming pool. A variety of boat trips to local attractions (Summer Isles, Handa Island - one of the largest seabird colonies in N W Europe, seal colony, Britain's highest waterfall, gardens) is available from many points along the coast. A daily (except Sunday) ferry service to the Outer Hebrides of Lewis and Harris also leaves Ullapool harbour allowing a day trip, or longer, exploring the historic islands.
Nearer to home, the Tourist Information Centre, plus local craft and book shops offer interesting perspectives on the history of the area, particularly the geology and crofting heritage.
Culkein sandy beach is within easy walking distance (about 500 metres) and other fine, safe, white sand beaches are close by. The surrounding area is famed for wildlife including otters, seals, red and roe deer and bird life including golden eagles.
This area has been described as Europe's last great wilderness, enjoy it while you can - it’s a very special place.
